Excerpts about Shunryu Suzuki

Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind in Ambivalent Zen : One Man's Adventures on the Dharma Path by Lawrence Shainberg

Shainberg's path is somewhat unusual in that his father introduced him to the writings of Alan Watts, DT Suzuki, Zen friendly psychology, J. Krisnamurti, and others while he was young. As a teenager he went to a workshop in New York City led by Alan Watts and Charlotte Selver, both of whom played a role in Shunryu Suzuki's American life. Richard Baker heard of Suzuki through just such a workshop. Later Shainberg meets Krisnamurti in Ojai. His accounts of practice with other teachers in New York were most interesting to me - Eido Shimano, Soen Nakagawa, Bernie Glassman, and Kyudo Nakagawa whom he studied with the longest and who is an unforgettable character. Shunryu Suzuki came into the picture through Shainberg's reading Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind, the account beginning at the bottom of page 83 and continuing on to the next two pages. - dc
